DIBRUGARH, March 28 - The CPI (M) today staged a sit-in-demonstration near Chowkidinghee here to press for early completion of the National Register of Citizens and in support of various other demands.
The party has demanded that the foreigners in the State be detected and deported in accordance with the March 24, 1971 deadline. They urged upon the State government to expedite the updating of the NRC.
Other demands of the district unit of the CPI (M) included protecting the geographical boundaries of the State, provincialisation of all venture schools and regularisation of the jobs of contractual teachers besides rolling back the prices of edible items and cooking gas cylinders etc.
In another similar demonstration, the contractual teachers from various schools of the district demanded that the rule of equal work equal pay be implemented. They also demanded pay as per the 7th Pay Commission. The contractual teachers led by its district leaders Debo Kumar Dehingia and Tapan Gogoi also called upon the State government to consider regularisation of their jobs at the earliest amongst others.
