Correspondent TEZPUR, March 28 - Brisk preparation is on to celebrate the Namami Brahmaputra festival by the district administration here to be held from March 31 to April 4.

Outlining the five-day-long river festival, Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur Manuj Kumar Deka said that on the first day of the programme at 7 am, there will be offering of puja on the bank of river Brahmaputra at Jahajghat and it will be followed by common yoga demonstration, flag hoisting and formal inauguration of the programme.
At 9:30 am, a cultural procession will be taken out from the Nehru maidan. At 10 am, traditional sports including kabaddi, beach volleyball, tug of war etc., will be inaugurated at Jahajghat. It will be followed by inauguration of traditional food mela, opening of exhibition organised by students.
At 2 pm, a trade fair and ‘Brahmaputra Cashless Food mela” will be organised by the SHGs. In the evening, the inauguration of a bhaona cultural function will be held at Jahajghat.
On the next day on April 1 at 6 am, a cleanliness drive christened as ‘Sachwa Tezpur Abhiyan’ will be held. It will be followed by common yoga, opening of Brahmaputra river cruise, exhibition organised by the students.
At 10 am, there will be the inauguration of tea-tourism at Dhekiajuli and Naharani tea estates. Besides these traditional sports, quiz and art competition on Brahmaputra, self-composed poetry recitation, traditional, marathon race etc., will be held. The five-day-long festival also includes release of a souvenir, prize distribution etc.
The Deputy Commissioner also said that river cruise and river dolphin site seeing will be the major attraction of the five-day-long programme.
