IMPHAL, March 28 – The 24-hour general strike called by All Manipur Village Defence Force (VDF) Welfare Association partially affected normal business activities in Manipur State capital here today.

It, however, did not affect the functioning of the State Secretariat. Markets and other business establishments, besides educational institutions in Imphal remained unaffected.

The strike affected normal life in some areas in Imphal West, Imphal East and Thoubal districts. It also severely affected movement of passenger and goods carrying vehicles. The road leading to Wangoi, Mayang Imphal towns, etc., were blocked by strike supporters by burning tyres and piling up stones and wood.

The strike was called by the Association demanding immediate release of 16 arrested VDF personnel besides fulfilling their demands for hike in their honourarium, service security, etc. Around 10,000 VDF personnel, who were recruited to guard the villages, are provided a monthly honourarium of Rs 3,000 besides ration money.
