Bandh total in Garo Hills
CORRESPONDENT
TURA, March 19 The Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP)s call for a two-hour shutters-down strike in the Garo Hills region was successful as almost all business establishments remained closed from 10 am to 12 noon. The bandh was called in protest against the selection of AT Mondal as Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Most NGOs within Meghalaya as well as opposing MLAs have condemned the move of the Congress to field a non-tribal as the Speaker, which is a very prestigious post, to a tribal State. They contended that there are enough tribal candidates to take up the post and the Mukul Sangma Government should have taken the sentiments of the tribals into consideration before taking the decision. The bandh was peaceful.

While the bandh has been total in the Garo Hills, the Khasi Jaintia Hills was not affected by the shutdown.
