AASU meets Speaker over safeguards
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, March 18 – A delegation of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today held talks with Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi on the demand for providing constitutional protection to the indigenous people of the State under provisions of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Talking to The Assam Tribune after the meeting, AASU general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said they apprised the Speaker about the decision taken by the AASU and 26 organisations representing different ethnic groups on the definition of Assamese people at a meeting on Tuesday.

The delegation told the Speaker that constitutional protection to the indigenous people and reservation of seats in the Assembly, Parliament and local bodies were a must to prevent a Bangladeshi national from becoming Chief Minister of Assam.

The Speaker told the AASU delegation that he would soon convene a meeting with it and the 26 organisations, while he was also meeting representatives of other organisations including literary bodies on the issue.
