DIPHU, March 16 - Too many candidates have lined up for contesting from Diphu Autonomous District constituency under the BJP banner for a sure win.
Joyram Engleng, sitting MLA of Howraghat was the BJP nominee during the 2014 election, who missed the target by a little margin. He is a capable contender since he established the foundation of BJP in the autonomous hill district and the rest, as they say, is history.
Former Diphu MLA Bidyasing Engleng, who joined the BJP recently by ditching the Congress, is another contender. His name also features among the higher-ups of the BJP leadership. His name has been shortlisted by the State Screening Committee of the BJP on Thursday as the candidate for the upcoming election. Beside Engleng, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council’s Executive Member Horensing Bey is also a probable candidate.
Other candidates are Dr Mansing Rongpi, seating MLA of Baithalangso. The BJP has already formed a panel to finalise candidates for the upcoming election.
If the apex body of BJP chooses not to ground any elected person from public office to avoid any re-polling, senior member of BJP state body and former Karbi Anglong district BJP president Lonki Phangcho, a retired IAS officer, may also become the ultimate choice of the party.
