GUWAHATI, March 14 - The trial run for undertaking repair of the old Saraighat Bridge will be undertaken tomorrow by the National Highways Authority of India and Railways.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Prasanta Saikia, the exact time of the trial run is yet to be confirmed and consultation in this regard is under way between the Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup district administrations.
During tomorrow’s trail run, rail service will not be affected as work will only be undertaken on the upper deck (road section) of the bridge. Movement of vehicles during the trial run will be diverted via the new Saraighat Bridge which is a road-only bridge.
It is noteworthy that the old Saraighat Bridge was constructed in the early 1960s and during recent years a number of cracks have developed on its upper deck.
NF Railway Public Relations Officer Nripen Bhattacharya said that the railway authorities would provide all logistic support to the local administration for the trial run tomorrow. Based on the feedback received during the trial run the railway authorities will decide on how to proceed with the actual repair work of the bridge at a later date.
Bhattacharya added that the actual repair work will take around 90 days and during that period the road section of the old bridge will have to be closed down. As such, for undertaking repair of the entire bridge, permission will have to be granted by the State government to close down vehicular movement on the upper deck during the repair period.
