NEW DELHI, March 13 - The Congress has decided to recommend selection of candidates in four constituencies in Assam to the party’s central election committee for a final selection.
A meeting of the party screening committee held here late last night, attended by PCC president Ripun Bora and State Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, among others, broadly finalised the candidates for 10 parliamentary seats, sources disclosed.
The screening committee recommended the names of Paban Singh Ghatowar (Dibrugarh), Gaurav Gogoi (Kaliabor), Pradyut Bordoloi (Nagaon), Swarup Das (Karimganj), Sushmita Dev (Silchar), Hema Prova Devi, Dwijen Sarma and Bhubaneswar Kalita (Mangaldai), Biren Singh Engti and Khor Singh Ingti (Diphu), Susanta Borgohain and Gayatri Hendique (Jorhat).
It also recommended that the candidates for Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhubri and Guwahati should be selected by the party election committee, when it meets on Saturday.
Sources said that in both Barpeta and Dhubri seats, two MLAs have applied – Wajed Ali Choudhury (Dhubri) and Abdul Khaleque (Barpeta), while the party has decided to nominate only one sitting MLA. The screening committee will again meet on Friday to sort out the matter, after which it will be referred to election committee.
Meanwhile, the party has run out of option as far as Guwahati seat is concerned, and it is now looking at the possibility of nominating some prominent and influential citizen of the city, sources added.
