GUWAHATI, March 10 - The Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP) has appealed to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to make arrangements for extending legal assistance to those detention camp inmates, who have enough documental evidence in favour of their claim to Indian citizenship.
ACLP Leader Devabrata Saikia said in a statement here that the ACLP, through a letter, has urged the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to arrange for extending legal assistance to such detainees through the National Legal Service Authority or such agencies.
This has been done to avoid the possibility of genuine Indian citizens facing implications and unnecessary harassment in the process of detection of foreigners. There are a good number of citizens, who have sufficient proof in their possession to prove that they are genuine Indian citizens, but have been detained in the detention camps meant for the foreigners, said Saikia.
A delegation of the ACLP has visited such detention camps in Kokrajhar and Goalpara districts, where some people despite their possessing sufficient proof to prove their Indian citizenship, were found to be declared as foreign nationals by the Foreigners’ Tribunals, Saikia said.
