Women’s Day celebrated

 GUWAHATI, March 9 - On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Centre for Environment, Social and Policy Research (CESPR), a city-based charitable trust, held a legal awareness camp for women at its office at Rukmini Nagar on Wednesday.

The camp was attended by several women, who sought legal advice on various issues. The programme was addressed by Sabita Devi, managing trustee of CESPR, who is also an advocate. The event was also addressed by several social activists. “There were a lot of queries on issues related to domestic violence and harassment due to dowry demands,” said Devi.

She added that CESPR was planning a week-long camp at its office soon, and would also organise such legal awareness camps in several districts of the State.

Pragati Mahila Samiti of FA Ahmed Nagar, Panjabari, also celebrated International Women’s Day at the residence of Samiti president Mafida Khanam Mullah. Several distinguished guests, including Ryna Khanam Majumdar, Dr Aparajita Barkataky and Runema Rahman, spoke on the occasion.

The Samiti also felicitated social activist Anjana Das for her contribution to social causes. Majani Rahman Ahmed conducted the meeting.

Meanwhile, International Women’s Day was also celebrated at UCO Bank, Bhetapara branch, in Guwahati on Wednesday. KP Sahu, circle head, NER, of UCO Bank, presided over the meeting. Chief guest Anandita Bhattacharyya, General Manager, RBI, lauded the role of women employees in shaping economic progress. Guest of honour Reena Bhowmick, principal of Shishu Niketan Vidyalaya, stressed on women’s education.

Meanwhile, on International Women’s Day, NEF Law College launched a four-day intra-college event. Keeping in view this year’s Women’s Day theme – ‘Be bold for change’ –the event will include seminars, essay competition, recitation competition, extempore speech competition, skit competition, Rangoli making, etc., among others.

The event is being executed by the faculty members of NEF Law College with the involvement of students under the guidance of principal, Dr Ruma Bordoloi, another press release stated.
