IMPHAL, March 8 - International Women Day was celebrated in Manipur today under the theme – Time is Now: Rural and Urban Activists Transforming Women’s Lives. The State level function was held at Raj Bhavan here with Governor Dr Najma Heptulla as chief guest.
Women achievers of the State also attended the function wherein 16 women were honoured. Speaking on the occasion Governor Dr Heptulla said women in the region have grown up in a more liberal society, facing less hostile challenges unlike in a male dominant environment.
Stating that women from North East especially Manipur are very much empowered than the women from the rest of the country, the Governor said so they are traditionally better placed in the social rung.
Highlighting the achievements of weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and boxer Mary Kom, she said women in the State are leading in all spheres and have earned recognitions in the national as well as international levels. She also cited the popular Ima Keithel (Mother’s market) in Imphal as a clear example of the economic independence of women in Manipur.
Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister Nemcha Kipgen urged women to identify their strengths and abilities, and move towards a world of empowerment and contribute equally to the betterment of the society.
