Bangladesh Prez arrives in Guwahati

 GUWAHATI, March 8 - Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid arrived in the city today on a three-day visit to Assam and Meghalaya.

Hamid, who was accompanied by his wife and a delegation of officials, reached Guwahati this afternoon in a special flight from Dhaka.

He was welcomed at the LGBI Airport by Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Irrigation Minister Ranjit Dutta, PWD Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Chief Secretary TY Das, Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal, Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Nath, and others.

From the airport, the Bangladeshi President went directly to his hotel.

Later, he and his wife visited the Kamakhya temple. He was welcomed at the temple by the Bor Doloi of Kamakhya Mohit Sarma, and president and secretary of the Bordeuri Samaj Bhupati Sarma and Bhupesh Sarma respectively.

Hamid and his wife were presented with bouquets and a replica of the Kamakhya temple and also briefed about the history and architecture of the place.

Afterwards, Hamid took a cruise in the Brahmaputra river aboard the vessel Al-Fresco Grand from the Kasomari ghat, before returning to the hotel.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held a meeting with the Bangladeshi President in the evening. Governor Mukhi later in the evening hosted a dinner for the visiting dignitary at a city hotel.

Hamid will depart for Meghalaya tomorrow morning and visit places where he was based during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. He will spend the night in Meghalaya and return to Guwahati on Saturday and then depart for New Delhi.
