TEZPUR, March 8 - Conscious sections here and SSB officials have expressed grave concern over the Ministry of Home Affairs’ move to shift India’s oldest SSB training centre located at Devendra Nagar (Salonibari) here to Jammu and Kashmir.

It is to be mentioned here that the Centralized Training Centre SSB, situated 18 km from Tezpur town on the Tezpur-Balipara road was established on December 1, 1965. It covers an area of 142 acres of land surrounded by lush green fields from all sides. Two other establishments i.e.., the CSD & Workshop and Composite Hospital, Tezpur (at Salonibari) are also located within the campus of this Centralized Training Centre.

The campus initially came into existence during the IInd World War and was used by the British troops as a camping ground for the Allied Troops. Later, various Assam Police battalions occupied the campus. However, after the Chinese aggression in 1962, the campus was used by various Indian Reserve Police Battalions which were deployed in forward post in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Centralized Training Centre of SSB besides the above mentioned services towards the nation has also been playing a vibrant role in many critical moments like communal riots and natural calamities.

However, under the direction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, the Director General of SSB has issued an order to shift the historic training centre . Various organisations including Boro Sahitya Sabha, Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Sonitpur ABSU and AASU, Goroimari Nagarik Mancha have strongly opposed the move to shift the same to some other place and urged the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India to refrain from enforcing the decision.

The secretary of Central Committee, Boro Sahitya Sabha, Prasanta Boro in a telephonic conversation came down heavily on the move by the MHA, stating that it is nothing but an act to hurt the sentiments of the people of the region. A member of the central executive, Asam Sahitya Sabha, Pankaj Barua appealed to the authority concerned not to shift the CTC, SSB located here in Tezpur.

On the other hand, one CTC, SSB, Salonibari-based official who didn’t want to be lamenting the MHA’s decision opined that the SSB is not only an a security organisation but it also works in the social field imparting training to the common people of the society and prepare them to combat every evil that can possibly harm the sovereignty of the nation.
