|Call for steps against rhino poaching|
GUWAHATI, March 8 - The Guwahati branch of the Government Pensioners’ Association, Assam has urged the State government to take effective steps to check poaching of the rhino and ensure conservation of wildlife.
According to the association, there have been serious lacunae in the wildlife protection initiatives. Many officers are not sincere in their duties, particularly in respect of patrolling by the forest guards. It also rued the fact that the guards are the most neglected lot with a meagre salary of 6-7 thousand rupees without any job security as they have been kept as casual employees.
A welcome initiative taken up by the pensioners’ body’s Guwahati branch has been the move to visit old-age homes and orphanages to help the inmates in whatever way possible. As a starter, members of the association visited Mother Old Age Home at Jyotinagar in the city and interacted with the inmates. The association offered the day’s lunch to the inmates. The association has appealed to the government to come up with a comprehensive scheme to build old-age homes and orphanages in the State.
