|Poll panel asked to hold GMC elections|
GUWAHATI, March 8 – The Guwahati Development Department has already written to the State Election Commission to hold the election to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, this was stated by the department’s minister Ajanta Neog at the State Assembly here today. She was replying to a debate on the cut motion on the demand of the department for a supplementary grant of Rs 29 crore.
The minister underlined the need for improving the condition of the rural areas and other urban areas of the State to check onrush of people to Guwahati. She said that there was 70 per cent rise in the population of the city in 2001 compared to its population in 1901.
The minister also apprised the House that the State Government has taken up the issue of introducing metro rail in the city with the Central Government. A three-storey parking place is being developed at the Shraddhanjali Kanan, while efforts are on to set up such a parking place at the Panbazar plot of the Textbook Production and Publication Corporation. A parking area below the Athgaon flyover is also planned.
The gap between the expenditure and earning of the city is widening with it recording an earning of Rs 60 crore against an expenditure of Rs 80 crore, the minister said. Significantly, revision of the city’s tax has not been done for the past about 20 to 25 years. The Central Government has by this time asked for introducing the unit area method for assessing the urban area tax to become eligible for Central assistance.
The minister also told the House that a uniform building bylaw for the city is under preparation and a committee has been formed to look into the problems of the individuals in relation to introduction of this bylaw.
