SGBG decries ‘whimsical’ change in city bus routes, stops
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, March 6 - Voluntary organisation Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) today resented the way the Kamrup (Metro) district authorities have changed the city bus routes and stops in the city without consulting the residents, or the city bus users of the city in a thorough manner.

SGBG president KK Barua, vice president Ajoy Dutta and general secretary Satyen Doloi said in a statement here today that the decision of the district authorities in this connection is whimsical and it is far from being a comprehensive one. The decision has been implemented abruptly and the implementation came at a time when school final examinations are on.

This has resulted in severe hardships for the common people, particularly the examinees, said the SGBG office-bearers.

The changes effected in the routes and stops of the city buses have also made the city bus services meaningless for the common people in general. City bus services are the cheapest of the mode of transport for the common Guwahatians. But the official decision on the routes and stops has made these services clumsy for the city bus users.

However, it is also a fact that there is a need to bring the unruly city bus operators of Guwahati under control. There should be some strict rules for the purpose. The practice of road race often resorted to by the city bus operators needs to be stopped, together with the practices of overloading and whimsically stopping the buses at any place.

The city bus operators of Guwahati should be so reined in that the slander they have brought to the city with their unruly behaviour could be done away with effectively.

But in doing this, the Guwahatians should also be taken into confidence, so that a flawless, comprehensive decision can be adopted, said the SGBG office-bearers.
