DHEMAJI, March 3 - The Dhemaji district unit of All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) on Friday observed a two-hour National Highway- 15 blockade at Gogamukh demanding stern action against the illicit liquor trade.
The AASAA’s movement was against selling of illicit liquor in the wake of more than 150 deaths after consuming illicit liquor in the tea gardens of Golaghat and Jorhat districts.
The AASAA members blocked National Highway-15 at Gogamukh Chariali in Dhemaji district on Friday and shouted slogans against sloth by the Police and Excise departments. They also submitted a memorandum to the Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner through the Circle Officer of Gogamukh, demanding legal action against people involved in this business.
Talking to mediapersons at Gogamukh, AASAA president Rajesh Hasda and Nirantar Tanti alleged that the Dhemaji district administration has failed to take action against the growing illicit liquor trade in the district, which has become a major problem, especially in the tea gardens.
They also underscored the need for carrying out stern steps to control the menace.
