The new district includes Sonapur civil subdivision and Chandrapur subdivision.

Dr M Angamuthu, DC of Kamrup Metropolitan, Hemanta Kumar Das, DCP of Guwahati East Police District, Munindra Nath Ngatey, ADC Kamrup Metro and other administrative officials were present at the inaugural function.

Devasish Chakrabarty has been appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of East Kamrup district and Manmohan Boro has been appointed as the Superintendent of Police of East Kamrup Police district.

Speaking at the inaugural function, which was attended by hundreds of local residents, Dr Angamuthu said that the new district was created as Government of Assam wanted to bring itself closer to the people. He said the required infrastructure for the new district administration would be provided within six months.

Chakrabarty, a 1986 batch ACS officer, said that he would leave no stone unturned while delivering proper services to the people.

It may be recalled that formation of a new district – East Kamrup – was announced by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in his Republic Day speech on January 26 this year.
