BJP bid to woo SC people
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, March 1 – The effort of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to woo different communities in the State has gained momentum and on Tuesday the party announced a slew of welfare initiatives for the scheduled caste (SC) community that would be undertaken when it gets the mandate in the coming Assembly elections.

It needs to be mentioned here that only a couple of days back, the national general secretary of the BJP, Vijay Goel had extended the party’s solidarity to the tea community by demanding a CBI inquiry into the killing of Adivasi student leader Bosco Chermaco. Goel had assured that the party would rehabilitate the evicted Adivasis in Lungsung in Kokrajhar on coming to power.

In tune with the party’s strategy of attracting different sections of the electorate, its general secretary Thawarchand Gehlot on Tuesday told mediapersons here that the BJP would implement special welfare schemes for the uplift of the SC community in the State.

Gehlot described the ruling Congress, both at the Centre and the State, as being apathetic towards the problems of the SC people and referring to the Ranganath Mishra Commission, he said it was a proof of the Congress party's anti-SC stand. “The Commission report is a threat to the integrity of the country and will encourage conversion,” said Gehlot, terming the report as a conspiracy against the SC community.

On the other hand, the State BJP president Ranjit Dutta while interacting with the media said that several resolutions have been adopted by the party for the development of the SC community in the State.

“We demand of the government to fill all the SC backlog posts in different departments and to utilise the Central funds for the SC people for the development of the community without transferring the same to other heads,” said Dutta, adding that the party on getting the mandate in the Assembly elections will relocate the SC people affected by flood and erosion and provide them land pattas. “We will set up Ambedkar Bhawans in every district and free the land encroached by the Bangladeshis,” assured Dutta. He said that the party will also introduce special scholarships for the SC students.
