DIBRUGARH, June 29 – Floodwaters have begun to subside in most of the affected areas in the district and the Brahmaputra waters, which were hitting the age-old dyke near the town here, have begun receding. The water level in the Brahmaputra has come down from the danger level at Dibrugarh, Dholla, Pasighat and Nimatighat gauge stations as recorded at 3 pm yesterday.However, hundreds of men, women and children under Rohmoria and Larua mouzas are still sheltered in relief camps, roadsides and raised land areas. Officials from the respective revenue cirlces along with local panchayat members were still distributing relief materials to the families along with panchayat members in the relief camps. Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Thursday burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on RKB Path near Khemka market here in protest against the failure of the Central Government to protect the historic Majuli river island and for its apathy towards the recurring flood and erosion problem of the State.
The youth body burnt the effigy of the Prime Minister in different districts as part of the Statewide protest against the indifference of the Central Government towards flood and erosion in the State. The organisation had condemned both the State and the Central Governments for their lethargic approach in reaching out to the flood victims. The youth body has demanded that flood and erosion be declared as national crisis.
The district body of the AJYCP here has called upon the district administration to accelerate it relief and rescue operations in the flood affected villages along with relief measures for their cattle and birds, particularly under Rohmoria and Larua mouzas.
