Barpeta flood toll rises to 10

 BARPETA, June 29 – The overall flood situation in Barpeta district worsened on Wednesday and the death toll rose to ten in the current wave of floods. One Jayanta Talukdar (32) lost his life at Tangla under Sarupeta Revenue Circle. With earlier nine in the tally, the total number of human casuality has increased to ten. About 1,000 people were evacuated to safer places as a precautionary measure.

According to information available, all rivers in the district are showing a rising trend. The Mandia Baghbar Road under Mandia circle has been submerged at several places. Infrastructure including roads and embankments has been destroyed and many of these are yet to be reported officially. So far, 340 villages have been affected consisting of a population of more than two lakh. Cropland of about 14,000 hectares has been washed away.

Reports of inundation of fresh areas have been pouring in and the destruction will be much higher than the present assessment.

The Brahmaputra embankments at Malipara Fulbari section under Chenga Revenue Circle and Pazarbhanga under Barpeta Revenue Circle and Beki Embankment at Bardanga have become vulnerable with imminent danger to hundreds of villages.
