Shoot-at-sight orders against poachers demanded
TEZPUR, June 24 - Reacting strongly to the unchecked poaching of rhinos at Kaziranga National Park, AASU adviser, Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya has demanded that the new BJP-led Assam Government take exceptional measures like shoot-at-sight orders against the poachers.

Interacting with mediapersons here on Wednesday night after attending the 47th Bishnu Rabha Divas organised by the Tezpur Unit AASU at Swahid Bakori here, he further opined that until and unless the wide network involved in the alleged poaching of wildlife including the rhinos in Kaziranga over the years is uprooted, saving it in Kaziranga National Park will not be possible. Appreciating the government’s sincere initiative in this regard, Dr Bhattacharyya appealed to the Government and the Forest Minister as well to form a special security force with the local indigenous Assamese youths who love wildlife and the natural resources of the region from their core of heart.

“Without meting out exemplary punishment to the evil elements which are involved in poaching the world famous wild life in nexus with the high profile officers of the Forest department and political leaders, we will not be able to check this burning issue, related to the dignity of the Assamese people and the region,” he said adding as a quick intervention that the responsibility of security of the KNP should immediately be handed over to the Army.

On the other hand, replying to the queries of the media persons regarding the ongoing NRC upgradation process, Dr Bhattacharyya appealed to the government employees to extend a helping hand for preparing a correct NRC. Moreover, sharing his views regarding keeping memory of four doyens including Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Nata Surya Phani Sharma and music legend Dr Bhupen Hazarika alive, he demanded that the Government prepare curriculum on them in every standard of the academic course. “Chairs on each of the four cultural icons should be opened in every university of the region,” he maintained and urged the Government to name any public institution like auditorium or community hall after the four cultural icons.
