AIZAWL, June 22 - Barely 12 hours after a mild earthquake jolted Mizoram yesterday afternoon, a bigger one occurred this morning, leaving several buildings damaged in eastern Mizoram’s Champhai district. There were no human casualties in the two earthquakes.

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked Champhai district at around 4:10 am today.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred 27 km southwest of Champhai with its epicentre 20 km deep inside the earth.

The earthquake left huge cracks on private residences, a church building and a community hall in Champhai district. It also caused cracks on highways and roads at several places.

“It was the biggest earthquake that I have ever experienced in my life. If it had lasted longer, the damage would have been very massive,” said Tluanga, a 60-year-old from Khawbung village in Champhai district.

The earthquake that measured 5.1 on the Ritcher scale was epicentred near Ngopa in north-eastern Mizoram, about 25 kms from Aizawl. The tremor was felt in Manipur and Myanmar too. No damage was reported.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah said that they spoke to Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and assured him of all possible help.

“Spoke to the Chief Minister of Mizoram Zoramthanga Ji on the situation in the wake of the earthquake there. Assured all possible support from the Centre,” a tweet by the Prime Minister read.

Shah also spoke to Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and took stock of the situation in the northeastern state after it was jolted by two earthquakes. The Union Home Minister also assured the Chief Minister of all possible help from the central government to deal with the situation.

“I have spoken to Shri @ZoramthangaCM ji, Chief Minister of Mizoram, to review the situation after the earthquake tremors in the state. I assured him all possible support from the central government. Praying for everyone’s safety and wellbeing,” Shah tweeted.
