Notorious criminal out on bail re-arrested
 MANGALDAI, June 22 - A joint police team of Kharupetia Police Station and Dhula Police Station on Friday apprehended a notorious absconding criminal and one of the prime accused in the gruesome murder and dacoity incident of eminent lawyer and the then president of Mangaldai Chambers of Commerce, Binay Kumar Ghosh, Asha Babu Islam from his hideout in Keotchuba village under Dhula Police Station. Later in the evening, on searching of his house and campus, the police reportedly recovered one sophisticated revolver and five rounds of live ammunition.

According to sources, the arrested Asha Babu Islam even after release from jail on bail was involved in the gruesome murder of his step mother, that too in connivance with his own father. According to the police, Asha Babu’s father Siddique Ali of village Bihudiya under Kharupetia Police station in Darrang district had married one Murshida Begum as his second wife, but later Murshida fled away to her parents home after facing physical torture by her husband. However, she was not allowed to live there also peacefully. The father-son duo forcibly took the helpless lady away from her parents and set her on fire causing severe burn injuries. Murshida succumbed to her burn injuries on July 15, 2018. The Kharupetia Police had registered a case vide number 270/18 under Section 307/302/498/494 of the Indian Penal Code and immediately arrested Siddique Ali while Asha Babu was absconding since then.

The prolonged absence of Asha Babu on the dates fixed by the court also resulted in issual of proclamation and attachment notice against him. According to the police, Asha Babu has also confessed his involvement in several criminal activities in Guwahati and other areas during the time when he was out on bail. Mention may be made here that earlier, he had looted 1250 grams of gold from a jewellery shop in Kerala which he later sold at Kharupetia for Rs 3 lakh, sources added.

Meanwhile, the people here have hailed the action of Darrang Police in arresting this absconding criminal anti-social elements.
