|‘BJP govt may create problems in NRC update exercise’|
GUWAHATI, June 22 - The Nagariktva Sangsodhani Birodhi Mancha and the Left-Democratic Mancha today expressed apprehensions that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in the State may create problems in the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
In a joint statement issued here, both the organisations alleged that in some development blocks of the State, the authorities have been found treating a section of the minorities in a discriminatory manner. The petitions filed by the people belonging to this section have been reportedly rejected on flimsy grounds. If this results in the non-inclusion of the pre-1971 migrants following a particular religion, this would frustrate the entire exercise of updating the NRC, said the organisations.
Moreover, the government announcement that it is bringing 150 additional companies of paramilitary forces to the State to keep the post-NRC publication situation under control is a provocative one.
Both the organisations have demanded that the names of genuine Indian citizens be included in the updated NRC and the names of those who migrated to the State from foreign lands after March 25, 1971 be excluded from the NRC.
