IMPHAL, June 22 – Participating in the nationwide “Jail Bharo” stir, BJP party workers here braved the seasonal heat and rain to stage a march to the gate of official bunglow of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh here this afternoon.
The nationwide “Jail Bharo” stir was held to decry the alleged anti-people policies of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre.
The BJP workers started their Jail Bharo march from their party office at Keishampat and passed through Nitaipatchuthek junction, Kangla pat Road before they were picked up by police from the CM’s official bungalow entrance. Later, the detained BJP workers were released.
BJP has been campaigning against the anti-people policies and activities of the UPA Government at the Centre since June 7 in consonance with the resolution taken in its national meeting held in New Delhi on May 31, said BJP Manipur unit President Sh Shantikumar. “The nationwide campaign was held against the economic policies of the UPA Government, which increased the price of petrol numerous times during its seven year tenure”, he said.
Bandh called off: The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) has called off its proposed 48-hour bandh following an assurance given by Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh during a meeting on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by the KSO Vice President Mangcha Baite, the proposed bandh has been suspended for the time being but the decision to cease all construction activities within the KSO’s premises of the disputed plot of land is still in force.
The student organisation had announced the bandh from midnight of June 22 to protest the alleged indifferent attitude of the government with regard to encroachment on its office plot in Imphal and the Nongbram killing case where two Kuki students were killed in 2009 on alleged charges of extortion.
