Rabha Divas observed

 GUWAHATI, June 20 – Rich tributes were paid to Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha today, with admirers recalling his contribution to arts, culture and nationalism at various events.

At Guwahati, the Asom Gana Parishad paid homage to Rabha at a function organised at their Ambari office. Party president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta offered floral tributes to a portrait of the iconic artist and patriot, and underlined the need to create a classless society free from exploitation in Assam. He appealed to the young generation to realize the ideals and works of Rabha. Several senior party members, including Girin Talukdar, Dr Kamalakanta Kalita, Gunin Hazarika, Hiten Goswami, among others, were present on the occasion.

Rabha Divas was also organised by the All Guwahati Students’ Union at the city’s Swahid Nyas Bhawan. Poet Bhupen Chakravarty inaugurated the solemn function by offering floral tributes to an image of Rabha. Chakravarty exhorted the attending students to become motivated by the ideals of the artist who contributed so much to art, dance, and music.

In another programme organised by the Prakash magazine of the Publication Board, thirty-five poets recited poems written on Rabha. Eminent poet Nalinidhar Bhattacharya spoke on the legendary artist who straddled the region like a colossus and also recited a poem, according to Sadananda Gogoi of the Publication Board.

A special programme on Bishnu Rabha and Purusuttom Das was also organised at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakahetra this evening.
