24 translators presented Akademi awards

President of Sahitya Akademi Chandrashekhar Kambar presenting the translation award (Assamese) to Partha Pratim Hazarika, assistant editor of The Assam Tribune at Agartala on Friday.
 AGARTALA, June 14 - As many as 24 literary personalities were awarded with Translation Prize 2018 by Sahitya Akademi at a simple ceremony at Sunkanta Akademy here on Friday. While Partha Pratim Hazarika was awarded for Assamese translation works, Mobinul Haq for Bengali translation and Nobin Brahma for Bodo language.

In his brief speech, Sahitya Akademi president Chandrasekhar Kambon said translation work is part of literary mainstream literary works. “Translation work has been introduced to reach out to the people familiar with different local languages other than English or Hindi”, he said.

Haraprasad Da, the eminent Odiya writer placed a demand to establish a national centre for translation to promote this form of literary work. “Since Sahitya Akademi is an autonomous body, it may consider to float a national centre for translation so that literary work of a particular language could reach out to maximum number of readers”, he opined.

There will be a Translators’ Meet here on Saturday where writers will be able to discuss various issues with office bearers of Sahitya Akademi.
