DERGAON, June 12 - Two persons have been arrested in the sensational murder case of a drug addict, Sanjib Goswami on June 9.
Sanjib Goswami (21) of Chandmari, Golaghat was found by his mother being carried to a hospital by unknown persons in an battery-operated rickshaw. When she shouted at the rickshaw to stop, it speeded to the hospital and left the boy there in an unconscious state. The hospital declared him dead.
The persons who were carrying the youth fled away.
The two persons who have been arrested are Bharati Gogoi and Akani Gogoi, the wife and brother of the main accused, Jojoo alias Mrinal Gogoi.
Runu Goswami, a resident of Chandmari and the mother of Sanjib revealed that her only son, who lost his father while he was two, was brought up by her. But one day she found that her son had got addicted to drugs. Later, she arranged for his treatment at Guwahati and he also promised to give up the addiction.
Sanjib returned from Guwahati to Golaghat after treatment on Saturday. On Sunday, he went to his old centre of drug abuse popularly known as ‘Jojoo’s Centre’ at Jyotinagar to take back his mobile that was given on loan for payment of his earlier credit at the centre. But, unfortunately he was found dead after going to that centre.
On the basis of the FIR lodged by the mother, the above-mentioned duo were arrested by the Golaghat police and investigation is on. Police said the accused Jojoo was reportedly absconding till the filing of this report.
Talking to this correspondent, Golaghat SP Pushparaj Singh said that police had intensified operation to curb drugs rackets in the district.
“We have arrested the two in connection with the latest incident and search operations are on. In the last two months, 15 persons have been arrested in drug-peddling cases”, the SP said.
“As many as 20 students were caught red-handed abusing drugs and handed over to their parents after counselling”, he said.
Though police is doing its level best, yet the drugs peddlers are having a field day in Golaghat district.
According to latest information, several minor students are abusing drugs in the district specially at Merapani, Golaghat, Dergaon etc.
Residents have demanded a high-level operation against drugs peddlers in the district. The residents marked a strong protest against the failure of police and civil administration on June 11. The protest rallies were organised separately by two organisations – Golaghat Media Forum and Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti – in which a large number of citizens, including many women participated.
