GUWAHATI, June 5 - A book on environment and social development was released by Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a function held at Gauri Sadan here yesterday.

The book, a joint effort by internationally recognised environmental expert Prof Dr Dulal Chandra Goswami, Dr Matiur Rahman and Satya Ranjan Borah, founder president of ‘Seujee Dharanee – the green earth’, highlights some realistic and sustainable approaches towards saving Earth.

The book, Prakriti, Manuh Aru Manyata, was appreciated by Sarma who thanked the contributors for coming together for such a noble cause. He also said the youth have to play a bigger role in society and shoulder the responsibility of taking the State forward.

The function, anchored by Ranjan Chakraborty, was attended by Barkhetri MLA Narayan Deka, Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal, Dr Mukut Kumar Devnath, Dr Jyoti Prasad Tamuli, HoD, Linguistic Department, Gauhati University, Dr Sarada Prasad Sarma, retired Head, Dept of Botany, Gauhati University, economist Dr Amal Kumar Barpujari, and other dignitaries.

“While talking about politics, economics and all others aspects of our society, we should not ignore our duty towards the environment and proper and sustainable use of natural resources. The Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi once said that Nature provides enough to satisfy every man’s need but not every man’s greed – which has now become a reality. To fulfil someone’s greed, we have been abusing Nature on daily basis,” said Satya Ranjan Borah, adding that the time has come to think and act to mitigate the risk of environmental degradation.

“Pollution, climate change, global warming, floods, landslides and quakes need to be addressed properly ... Let’s act together to move forward with an aim to have a green and healthy environment for our future generations,” he said.
