Job racket: Two frauds arrested
Rituraj Borthakur
GUWAHATI, June 3 - Asim Roy (named changed) was elated when he received the appointment letter for a trackman’s job in the railways.

He went to his place of posting – a nondescript railway station in the State – and even worked there for a couple of days, until he was shunted out by the station authorities who came to know that his appointment letter was a fake one.

Roy is among dozens of youths duped by two frauds in the city on the pretext of giving jobs and contracts in the railways.

The duo – identified as Dipjyoti Saikia of Hengerabari and Samrat Roy of Pandu – was today arrested by Panbazar police following a complaint by one Arabinda Deka.

Deka is a resident of Odalbakra and is one of the victims.

“For six months now, these two frauds have been avoiding the people from whom they collected lakhs of money. We have so far come across more than 12 youths whom the duo duped, but the list is increasing. They collected crores from them,” ACP Panbazar Suprotiv Lal Baruah told The Assam Tribune.

The youths collected varied amounts of money from the unsuspecting victims. For the fourth and third category jobs, like trackmen, etc, they collected amounts like Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh. For better jobs like ticket collector, they demanded Rs 5 lakh.

“In fact, they even gave appointment letters and conducted medical examination – all fake. Some of the youths who got the appointment letters went to the railway station where they were shown posted. In small stations, the authorities cannot immediately confirm the veracity of the appointment letter. The youths even worked at the stations for two/three days with the fake appointment letters, until the authorities came to know the truth,” the ACP said.

As Samrat Roy was a resident of Pandu, he used to hand over the appointment letters near the NF Railway headquarters at Maligaon. A Ford Endeavor vehicle has been seized from the frauds.
