Voters stayed with us: Miani
TURA, May 31 - Victorious Congress candidate Miani D Shira today thanked her supporters while acknowledging the public support her party received in the just-concluded by-election. Miani, who defeated NPP’s Clement G Momin by a margin of 3,191 votes, hit out at the MDA alliance led by the NPP on the use of money and muscle power to beat the Congress.

The run-up to the polls had seen a large number of cases both for and against the Congress as well as allegations of violence, allegedly perpetrated by supporters of both parties.

“We have never seen an election like this before. This was different from any of the previous elections in the Garo Hills,” said Miani while addressing a crowd of supporters outside her house at Ampati.

“They could not take away the support of 14,259 voters who had full faith in the Congress party and me despite the use of money and muscle power,” she added amid cheers from her supporters. Miani is the eldest daughter of former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

She promised her supporters of ensuring development in her constituency. “We have had to fight very hard for this election and now we will work to develop every nook and corner of the constituency,” said Miani.
