GUWAHATI, May 31 - Left-Democratic Mancha, Assam and Forum Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (FACAAB)-led by Dr Hiren Gohain, Harekrishna Deka and others, jointly organised a sit-in demonstration at the Lakshyadhar Bora Kshetra here today in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Hundreds of people took part in the demonstration. Those who spoke at the impromptu meeting held at the venue of the demonstration, included several leading personalities like former chief ministers Tarun Gogoi and Prafulla Mahanta, Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Debabrata Saikia, FACAAB’s Dr Gohain, former Minister and State president of the Janata Dal (Secular) Ramani Barman, former Principal of Cotton College Prof Udayaditya Bharali, CPI leaders Abani Barthakur and Durlabh Mahanta, CPI-M leaders Hemen Das and Uddhab Barman, Left-Democratic Mancha convenor Deben Bhattacharyya, former MP and Asom Gana Parishad leader Kumar Dipak Das and State president of the Nationalist Congress Party Dhiren Adhikari, among others.
Representatives of several other organisations also took part in the demonstration, which was held from 11 am to 2 pm.
The organisers of the protest programme sent a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the Kamrup (Metro) district administration, demanding convening of a special session of the State Assembly at the earliest to discuss the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
They also presented a memorandum to Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia with a request to raise the demand before the State government so as to bolster it.
