AHRC orders probe into custodial death

 GUWAHATI, May 31 – The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) comprising Chairperson Dr Justice Aftab H Saikia and Member Tarun Phookan ordered a magisterial inquiry into the custodial death of Palash Baruah at the Jorhat Medical College & Hospital while under judicial custody after being arrested in connection with the Mariani PS case No.90/13 for his alleged involvement in betting over the IPL cricket matches.

Baruah was lodged in the district jail, Jorhat.

It was reported by in the media that the deceased who was suffering from some illness at the time of his arrest was not provided with medicine and he was severely assaulted while in police custody by the Mariani O/C, Musfique Ali and an IPS officer, Sankar Rai Medhi. Neglect on the part of the jail authorities had also been ascribed in the news which prompted the Commission to take the case suo-motu.

The District Magistrate, Jorhat, will inquire into the circumstances leading to the custodial death and submit the report within a period of 30 days.
