Relief camp inmates demand more govt relief

GAURIPUR, July 27 – The people who fled from Gossaigaon, Bhaoraguri, Tulshibil and other areas of the Kokrajhar district under BTAD due to ethnic violence are taking shelter in various camps under Gauripur and Golakganj police stations. More than 3,000 homeless people are residing in eight camps, six at Gauripur, one at Balajan and one at Pratapganj.The inmates of the camps had been living without food since July 23. On Thursday, the Government provided relief to the inmates of these camps –600 grams of rice to an adult, 400 grams of rice to a minor, 100 grams of masur dal and 30 grams of salt to each of them. The local health department provided medicines to the ailing inmates. The affected people were not satisfied with the relief materials and demanded more relief. The local people and some NGOs also provided relief to the affected people. It may be mentioned here that the shops and markets of the subdivision remained closed and the people were still in the grip of a fear psychosis due to the violence and promulgation of curfew in the subdivision. There is also scarcity of essential commodities, resulting in daily hardships. The Bodo people of Gauripur, Dhubri and Golakganj were evacuated by the security forces. People of all sections of communities condemned the local MLA for his alleged inaction in this period of crisis. However, peace commitees were formed for restoration of peace and tranquillity among the people of the area. |
