Tiwa students’ body condemns Kokrajhar violence
Correspondent
RAHA, July 27 – The All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU) has condemned the communal violence between the Bodo and minority people which started in Kokrajhar district and later spread to the neighbouring districts of Chirang and Dhubri. The students’ union appealed to both the communities to abjure and abstain from all forms of violence for the sake of humanity and to all sections of people in general to maintain peace and harmony in the region.

The president and the general secretary of the ATSU, Prahlad Kumer Masrong and Cheniram Malang respectively, said, “We express serious concern over the communal violence taking place in Kokrajhar and would like to appeal to the Government to take strong preventive steps and provide adequate security and protection to the people of other communities such as Koch-Rajbongshi, Adivasi, Nepali, Rabha, Assamese and Bengali residing in the disturbed areas,” they said.

“The communal violence has taken a huge toll on life and property and has displaced thousands from their homes. Therefore, we would like to further appeal to the Government to take immediate steps to provide food, shelter and security to the affected people,” they further stated.

“We would also like to appeal to all sections of people to exercise restraint and work together for peace and harmony,” they said in a press release here on Wednesday.
