The project aims to establish joint bilateral and multilateral project cooperation related to the Brahmaputra river basin impact assessment of changing land use and climate. The implementation of an Integrated Land Management System with prime focus on alleviation of floods, flash floods and large-scale bank erosion are some of the thrust research goals of the collaboration.

A report has been received from the Dibrugarh University sources that BRAHMATWINN, the international organisation constituted to study flood problems in the European and South Asian rivers headed by Professor Wolfgang-Albert Flügel has expressed its willingness to work in collaboration with Dibrugarh University. In this connection, Professor Flügel has communicated with the Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Professor KK Deka about their objective to visit Dibrugarh University from August 1 to 4 next to initiate the collaboration formalities between Friedrich-Schiller-University (FSU), Jena, Germany and Dibrugarh University.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between FSU, Jena, Germany and Dibrugarh University on August 2 next. A symposium will be organised on August 3 in which Professor WA Flügel will deliver his key-note presentations on Integrated Land Management System (ILMS) software utility and will brief on the results of BRAHMATWINN related to flood control, bank erosion and climate change impacts on the Brahmaputra basin.

The recent flood havoc created by the river Brahmaputra is assumed to be the outcome of the global warming induced climate change and resultant snowmelt in the eastern Himalayas. It is believed that the intensity of devastating floods and its recurrence will be more and more in near future. This opportune collaboration will carry immense significance in the field of flood mitigation and implementation of a scientific bench-mark study for a holistic and viable watershed management programme on the Brahmaputra basin, Vice Chancellor, Professor K K Deka stated.
