The students’ body has demanded urgent steps to ensure safety of the life and property of the common people in the troubled areas. For the purpose, the Government must deploy police, paramilitary forces and Army, it said.

It also demanded strict measures to ensure safety of the rail passengers.

Referring to the statement made by Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Sekhar Mooshahary that the Assam Government did not take any pre-emptive step to prevent the outbreak of violence in the BTAD areas and the subsequent attack in his village, the students’ body alleged that the Meghalaya Governor failed to get his village’s security ensured even after moving the Chief Minister and Director General of Police of the State.

The students’ body also demanded a public statement from the Chief Minister on the plea of BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary for sealing the Indo-Bangla border.

Meanwhile, a goodwill mission of the AASU has reached in the troubled areas. AASU president Sankar Prasad Roy is leading the mission.

Twenty leading citizens have made an appeal to the people to work for restoration of peace in the troubled BTAD areas. They have also demanded urgent steps to ensure safety of the life and property of the common people of these areas and supply of adequate amount of food stuff and medicines to the affected people.

The signatories of the appeal, who include noted critic Nalinidhar Bhattacharyya, social scientists Amalendu Guha and Deba Prasad Borooah, educationists Tarak Goswami and Udayaditya Bharali, noted writers Arun Sarma and Nirupama Bargohain, senior journalists Tilak Hazarika, Radhika Mohan Bhagawati, Haider Hussain and Nitya Bora, among others, also made an appeal to the media to maintain restraint while presenting the news of such incidents.
