PATACHARKUCHI, July 20 - A wooden bridge over the Kaldia river at Barnalikuchi village collapsed on Friday evening. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.

The bridge was constructed a few years back and was the only means of communication for the people of Ballatari Supa of Barnalikuchi village with the outside world.

The locals alleged that they had demanded repair of the bridge since a long time back, but to no avail. It is learnt that the local development committee also appealed for construction of the bridge before the State PWD Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass and the local MLA, though to no avail.

The incident has obviously cut off surface communication in the area, for which the rural people have been suffering a lot. The aggrieved people have in the meantime demanded speedy action to restore communication.

Having no other option left, the people of the area had used the foot bridge at the risk of their life and limbs. Significantly, no one was present at the time of the incident.

It may be mentioned that the recent flood along with strong currents of the river Kaldia washed away a post of the already weak bridge, which then collapsed.
