Two TE women labourers feted for humane gesture
Correspondent
DERGAON, July 19 – In a sequel to a heart-warming case when the milk of human kindness flowed freely, two lactating tea garden labourers were recently accorded a tumultous ovation for their exemplary gesture in saving a newborn.

The Missamara Primary Health Centre offered warm felicitation to the two tea garden women labourers, namely Meera Mudi and Rumi Mudi, who took turns to nurture a newborn baby by breastfeeding the infant after its mother died shortly after giving birth, i.e., on July 29 last year.

According to information available, Vishal Mirdha was born to one Gauri Mirdha of Purna Line in Balijan under Balijan Health Sub-Centre. But as Gauri subsequently breathed her last, ASHA facilitator Anjana Hazarika along with another ASHA worker Renu Kurmi went to Swapna Gopal Mirdha, the father of the newborn and requested two lactating tea estate labourers, namely Meera Mudi and Rumi Mudi to take turns in breastfeeding the newborn. As the two women readily agreed, the infant subsequently grew up into a healthy baby.

As a recognition of their exemplary gesture, both the women were felicitated by the Sub-Divisional Medical Officer of Missamara PHC, Dr Apurba Kumar Sarmah and ASHA facilitator Anjana Hazarika with a citation and a phoolam gamocha, besides a dress for the baby on behalf of Missamara PHC at a public meeting held at Balijan Purna Line Mazdur LP School.

In the felicitatory meeting held on the occasion with Anuwar Hussain in the chair, Dergaon MLA Arati Hazarika Kachari inaugurated the new building of Balijan health sub-centre. In the meeting which was attended by several doctors and officers, the MLA presented cash awards to the two women.
