|Fleeing rhino falls into gorge, dies|
KAZIRANGA, July 16 - An adult female rhino was killed when it fell into a deep gorge. The rhino was trying to climb up the foothills of Karbi Anglong along with three other rhinos, including its calf, at Engle pathar area under Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council district today, said the Director of Kaziranga National Park-cum-Tiger Reserve, Siva Kumar adding that these rhinos, perhaps in the early morning today, tried to move towards the hills of Karbi Anglong for taking safe shelter. He said the calf which was around 3 years of age was near the place where its mother died after it got stuck between two heavy rocks. Two other rhinos were killed due to drowning.
The current flood water level in Kaziranga park was receding as the flow of water of Brahmaputra river at Dhansirimukh in Bokakhat subdivision was showing a falling trend but flood water had already till now inundated a total of 169 anti-poaching camps inside Kaziranga National Park.
Eight hog deer species were killed by vehicle hits, while another six hog deer died due to drowning. About 30 hog deer species had been rescued by CWRC, at Borjuri in Kaziranga of which 23 hog deer had been later released and four were still under treatment. One sambar was also killed by a vehicle hit, while two wild boars died due to drowning in the floods.
