Tripura to provide rice at Rs 2 per kg

 AGARTALA, July 15 – Ahead of the State Assembly elections due in February, the Tripura Government has decided to provide rice at the rate of Rs 2 per kg to people living Below Poverty Line from next month.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said the decision to provide rice at the rate of Rs 2 through Public Distribution System (PDS) from August 1 was taken at the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Thursday.

He said 1,81,876 ration card holders living under BPL category, who were sold rice at the rate of Rs 6.15, would get rice at Rs2 per kg and the people who were getting rice under Antoday Annoyojana category at the rate of Rs 3 per kg would get rice at Rs 2 per kg. The number of cards under Antodyay Annayojana category is 1,13,124.

Sarkar said altogether 15 lakh people would be benefited. About 68 per cent of 36.71 lakh population in the State are in the BPL category. – PTI
