AIZAWL, July 13 - A few sets of badminton after a short meditation - that is how Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who turned 76 today, usually starts a day.

“Being on the other side of 70, Pu Zoramthanga is still going strong, physically and mentally, thanks to his self consciousness about his health,” a source close to the CM said. As Zoramthanga, a father of two, son Ramthansiama, 35, and daughter Milari, 31, celebrated his 76th birthday yesterday. The CM’s bungalow was flooded with birthday wishes from friends, relatives and party workers.

A Cabinet meeting today took a short break to celebrate the Chief Minister’s birthday. Zoramthanga cut a cake which he and his wife put into each other’s mouth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to wish Zoramthanga’s birthday.

“One of the seniormost and respected leaders in our polity, he has worked extensively for the welfare of Mizoram. May Almighty bless him with a long and healthy life,” Modi tweeted. Other central leaders, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, etc also wished Zoramthanga.

Born in 1944 in the nondescript village of Samthang near the Burma border in Champhai district, Zoramthanga completed his schooling from Govt Gandhi Memorial School in Champhai and later graduated in English from the DM College in Imphal, Manipur.

He joined the Laldenga-led Mizo National Front, then a banned underground outfit, in 1968 as a fresh graduate and held the second highest post, and vice president’s post in later years.
