SHILLONG, July 11 - A power struggle between the alliance partners of Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government has resulted in change of guard in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

People’s Democratic Party chief, PN Syiem has resigned as Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Council. Hispreaching Son Shylla of National People’s Party has been nominated as the CEM candidate by a group of MDCs. The new alliance has been named Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance.

The election to the vacant CEM post will be held on Thursday while the filing of nomination and scrutiny of papers was held today.

Earlier, Syiem resigned as CEM as a no-confidence motion was moved against him. He resigned without attending the session of the Council.

17 MDCs were opposed to Syiem as CEM of the Council. These MDCs were from NPP, UDP, HSPDP and also Syiem’s own party. Meanwhile, it is likely that Syiem would be contesting the upcoming Ranikor bye-election.
