GUWAHATI, July 11 - On the occasion of World Population Day, the National Health Mission (Kamrup Metro) and the Kamrup (Metro) district administration organised a bicycle rally here today to spread awareness about family planning and the importance of population control.
Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) Virendra Mittal inaugurated the rally, which covered the stretch from the Assam Engineering Playground at Chandmari to the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) at Panbazar.
Around 80 cyclists took part in the rally.
Speaking on the occasion, Mittal highlighted the need to control population in view of shrinking resources. He also spoke of the need to carry out intensive awareness campaigns to sensitise the target population on using family planning methods.
The Deputy Commissioner also spoke about the benefits of regular cycling and urged the people to adopt cycling as a means for achieving good health.
An awareness meeting was also held on the occasion at the MMCH where retired consultant (maternal health) of the National Health Mission PN Bora spoke about the dangers of population explosion and about how adopting family planning methods can help in managing the size of the family.
