TEZPUR, July 10 – The construction of the Tezpur Medical College is likely to be completed towards the end of this year. Construction works at Tumuki near the Bihaguri Development Block in Sonitpur district have been going on in full swing. Altogether 700 labourers have been working round the clock with a view to completing the allotted work and handing over the college hospital to the Health department as soon as possible. The fifth medical college of the State at Tumuki Agricultural Farm, some 18 km from Tezpur town, is expected to fulfil the long cherished dream of the people of the North Bank of the Brahmaputra river.
It may be mentioned here that a sum of Rs 160 crore was sanctioned for the construction of the medical college. Out of the allocated amount, a sum of Rs 125 crore was meant for the buildings of the medical college and the remaining Rs 35 crore for miscellaneous works. After the foundation stone of the medical college was laid by the President of India, Pratibha Patil on October 20, 2008, three construction companies of the State, TMC, EPIL (Engineering Project India Limited ) and Gautom Construction have been engaged in the construction works.
Regarding the progress of the construction works of the medical college, coordinator of the construction companies engaged in the construction of the medical college, Bajrang Lal Bengani and engineer KP Das, Deputy Project Manager stated that the buildings for hospital, college, boys’ hostel, girls’ hostel, café, kitchen, workshop, animal house, laundry, gas block, mortuary and incinerator has already been completed. The duo said that other building works would be completed within six months. “Accordingly, we can expect that the medical college will start functioning by 2012,” they added.
Moreover, for the execution of the administrative works of the college, the appointment process for various posts is going on. As part of it, the principal of the medical college has already been appointed.
