NBCC tunnel may help reduce city floods
Staff reporter
GUWAHATI, July 9 – Additional Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla today suggested taking advantage of the tunnel laid by the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) in Noonmati Sector -II for evacuating the floodwater from the city areas, said WRD Secretary Ratul Sarma.

Khosla inspected the Water Resources Department (WRD) pumping stations at different places of the city, along with WRD Secretary Ratul Sarma, WRD Chief Engineer Dilip Bhuyan, PWD Commissioner and Special Secretary Mohan Boro and other officials of the WRD this morning.

Ratul Sarma said, Khosla collected information on the storm water evacuation form Silsako Beel and through the Khanajan Sluice Gate.

Moreover, Khosla also suggested hiring of pumps to meet the emergency situation in the city, Sarma said.

Other sources in the WRD said, Khosla suggested different means like two pump houses-one at Bondajan Sluice Gate and the other at Khanajan Sluice Gate. He also suggested developing the Khanajan Sluice Gate into a five-shutter one from the existing single shutter one, so that it can carry more water from the Deepor Beel, which is the outfall of the Basistha River.

Khosla also suggested installation of two more pumps at the Bharalu Sluice Gate Pump House, sources said.
