NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 8 - Tension gripped the people of Gogamukh along the Lakhimpur-Dhemaji border following the arrest of anti-dam protesters while trying to block heavy machineries meant for the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation’s Lower Subansiri Hydro-electrical Power Plant (LSHEP) on Tuesday night. The members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Lakhimpur unit have been staging a protest against transportation of machineries to Gerukamukh for the past several days. Later, the AASU activists were arrested by police leading to a tense situation in the locality.

Several leading organisations, including AJYCP, ATASU, TMPK, AASCU also registered a strong protest opposing the dam citing that it would pose a threat to the people living in the area. They also blocked the road throughout the day shouting slogans against the NHPC and the BJP-led State government. Later, the entire machineries were sent to the project site with full escort by the police. “All the machineries were brought to the site violating COVID-19 protocol set by the Health deprtment. This is a ploy of the BJP-led government to accelerate the process of construction of the dam,” the leaders of the organisations claimed.
