Demonstrations by different bodies continue at Last Gate

 GUWAHATI, Jan 30 - Altogether three organisations namely the Sadou Asom Madhyahna Bhojan Karmachari Union (SAMBKU), the Assam Anganwadi Worker-Helper Union (AAWHU) and the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) staged sit-in demonstrations over their various demands at Dispur Last Gate on the third day of the Legislative Assembly’s budget session today.

 The AAWHU, as part of the agitation, also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal with a charter of demands that included salary hike along with pension and other benefits, allotment of more fund for ICDS scheme, construction of sanitary latrine and supply of safe drinking water along with proper facilities of maternity leave.

The SAMBKU staged a sit-in demonstration for the second consecutive day in protest against privatisation of the midday meal scheme and over its demand for salary hike and social safeguard.

In its charter of demands submitted to the Chief Minister as part of the protest, the AAGSU demanded immediate steps to grant ST status, constitutional safeguard as per the Assam Accord to the Gorkha community of the State and scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. They also demanded reservation of six Legislative Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency of the State for the Gorkha community.
