Rabha bodies decry police lathicharge
CORRESPONDENT
GOALPARA, Jan 28 – Leaders of the Rabha Hajong Joint Movement Committee (RHJMC) have expressed their resentment and strongly condemned the police lathicharge on peaceful demonstrators at Ranjuli High Secondary School on Sunday and demanded immediate removal of Dhaniram Bharali, officer in charge, and 2nd officer Bhaskar Saikia from the Ranjuli Police Station.

They also demanded a magisterial inquiry in to the entire incident and questioned the circumstances leading to the use of unwanted police force in absence of a magistrate.

It may be recalled that 14 women were injured on Sunday when police resorted to lathi charge to break a group of peaceful women protesters protesting a training programme of polling personnal for the ensuing Panchayat polls, at Ranjuli High Secondary School following a call by the RHJMC, which is demanding council polls ahead of the Panchayat polls.

Meanwhile, Jibon Rabha vice-president of RHJMC said that the police action was an outright incident of brutality and the authorities have to explain the repressive police action. He also accused the police of harassing its members and innocent people in the name of law and order and demanded a total stop of the police crack down on its activists by conducting frequent raids on their houses and arresting the members of the organisation.
